Grant Delivery FAQs

The following information provides insight into the current delay some of our nonprofits are experiencing in processing grant checks from Fidelity Charitable. The delays in processing could be due to the impact on their operations from COVID-19 disruptions. If you have general grant questions, please visit the Grants section of our Frequently Asked Questions.

If a charity does not process a grant check, Fidelity Charitable voids the check and returns the funds back to your Giving Account.

Fidelity Charitable voids a grant check if the charity does not cash the grant check. The check will be voided if:

  • The check is returned by the postal service to Fidelity Charitable
  • The check is not deposited by the charity in a timely manner
  • The donor requested that we void the check

There are a variety of reasons that a check may be returned to Fidelity Charitable. Here are some examples:

  • The normal course of business for a charity has been interrupted, and they are no longer able to retrieve checks
  • There have been postal service delays due to COVID-19 impact
  • The charity may have changed its address
  • The charity may have closed indefinitely

Unfortunately, no. Fidelity Charitable will not forward checks to a forwarding address. Those checks will also be returned. Non-Profits should contact Fidelity Charitable directly for address updates.

The recent adjustments made to your Giving Account could be because:

  • The grant check to the charity was returned to Fidelity Charitable
  • The check was not deposited by the charity in a timely manner

We are experiencing increased instances of both scenarios due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, adjustments to your Giving Account could also be made for other reasons. For additional details, log in to your Giving Account and click on View all grant history.

Our current policy requires us to void all checks that are returned or are not deposited by the charity past a specified timeline. After the check is voided, we cancel the grant and notify the donor. It is then up to the donor to recommend another grant.

Exception: In instances where the charities enroll in Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) during the check processing timeline, Fidelity Charitable may attempt to reissue the grant to the same charity via EFT.

Fidelity Charitable does not reissue grants that have been canceled or voided. Once the funds are returned to the donor’s Giving Account, it is up to the donor to recommend another grant to the same charity or make a new grant recommendation to the charities of their choice.

Exception: In instances where the charities enroll in Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) during the check processing timeline, Fidelity Charitable may attempt to reissue the grant to the same charity via EFT.

In exceptional instances Fidelity Charitable may reissue the grant. For further information, check out the question Are you going to reissue my grant? above.
