Fidelity Charitable appoints Nageeb Sumar Vice President, Philanthropic Strategies

The appointment comes as the nation’s second-largest grantmaker reaches the $4 billion grantmaking benchmark in record time

BOSTON, October 25, 2018—To better serve its mission to grow the American tradition of philanthropy, Fidelity Charitable, the nation’s second-largest grantmaker, is strengthening its services to provide more focus on philanthropic guidance and grantmaking. The organization today announced the appointment of Nageeb Sumar as Vice President, Philanthropic Strategies to support that mission. Fidelity Charitable’s announcement comes as charities have received $4 billion in grants recommended by its donors, a record-setting pace. Fidelity Charitable is on track to break the previous year’s granting high point of $4.5 billion in donor-recommended grants.

“With the rise in more sophisticated donors seeking donor-advised funds as a primary solution for their philanthropy, Fidelity Charitable has grown in responsibility and service to a robust community seeking superior solutions for greater impact on the causes they care about most,” said Pamela Norley, President, Fidelity Charitable. “We are excited that Nageeb will bring his insight and best practices from his experience as a grantmaker to help our donors give more effectively and have greater impact.”

Sumar spent almost nine years at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, most recently serving as Deputy Director, Philanthropic Partnerships, Global Policy & Advocacy. Recently, Nageeb co-led the Gates Foundation’s strategic focus around increasing the quantity and quality of charitable giving in the United States, China, India and the Middle East. He earned a law degree from McGill Law School, a master’s degree in international finance from Queen’s University School of Business, and bachelor’s degrees in economics and urban & regional planning from Cornell University.

Sumar will be based in Boston and will lead a team of philanthropic strategists dedicated to helping Fidelity Charitable’s donors optimize their donor-advised funds, construct strategic plans and deliver family meetings, to help them become leading philanthropists.

“I am thrilled to be joining a talented team at Fidelity Charitable, who are deeply committed to helping donors achieve their philanthropic goals and maximize their impact. Having managed grants with the Gates Foundation, I look forward to working with families on donating their time, talent and treasure to support their passions and contribute to improving the social sector,” said Sumar.
